Mass climate scientists, advocates say current state carbon emission target is too high to prevent catastrophe
After several months of preparatory work, my Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism colleagues and I are pleased to launch HorizonMass, the first standalone periodical that our organization has ever published.
Since BINJ’s core mission has been to produce longform investigative journalism, we have mainly been focused on syndicating news articles we produce to independent news organizations around Massachusetts heretofore. But as our internship program has expanded significantly in recent years, we feel like we have enough talent on hand from several universities in three cohorts every year to run a regular news outlet of our own. Which explains the HorizonMass tagline: “Independent, student-driven journalism in the public interest.”
With interns working with us as reporters, designers, marketers, and (for the first time) editors, together with our ever-growing crew of professional freelance writers, we can continue to do our part to train the next generation of journalists while covering more Bay State happenings than ever before. We hope you enjoy our initial offerings and support our efforts with whatever donations you can afford.

The Legendary Past And Uncertain Future Of The Harvard Square Theatre Will the iconic venue ever return to its rock roots as has been rumored? When I first discovered the Harvard Square Theatre on a lunch break from work, it felt like I had realized its potential all on my own. Although boarded up and broken down, the venue’s unassuming exterior sparked my curiosity. I was working as an event host on Palmer Street for the 2022 pop-up exhibition, the Art of Banksy. I was in the rare and somewhat disturbing mood of believing that I can do anything. And at the time, what I really wanted to do was open a nightclub. I was keen on finding the perfect location for this imaginary destination.
BINJ profiles of internet sensations tell stories behind local creatives with international fanbases This year, in addition to the community news and investigative reporting that BINJ is best known for, we are excited to get back into covering a lot of music and arts. It’s not a new initiative, we have produced long form features on local creatives since the beginning, but in 2023 we’re deliberately leaning in to fill more of these gaps. We’ll never get to everyone, but there are far too many people doing phenomenal things and making big moves out of Greater Boston whose whole stories haven’t been told.
